ISLT 9458: Technology and Assessment
Course Description: Learn how to assess specific types of knowledge, using technology to enhance the process. Explore innovative tools and means of assessment that help teachers individualize and differentiate instruction to improve learning. Develop a technology-enhanced assessment of student learning.
Reflection: Thinking back on this course, it was actually a little bit of a struggle for me. These past three years of teaching have drastically changed my mindset and outlook on teaching. As I entered the course I had thought that maybe we would be learning about different ways to assess students using strictly technology, and I have seen so how easy it is for students to cheat the system. Although I quickly learned that wasn’t the case and that this course was not strictly assessment via technology, it was about using technology the way it should be used, as a tool.
I loved reading and learning about the electronic portfolios and performance assessments. Both of those items incorporate technology into projects, they allow students to use technology to enhance their learning, and not actually do the learning for them. I enjoyed hearing about all the different online tools to assess higher order thinking that people use, learning about the electronic portfolio systems, and just the collaboration and discussions with my classmates in general. I was given so many ideas of different ideas and activities I could use within my own classroom, as well as able to see that I am not the only one going through the struggles of getting students motivated or standardized test ready while trying to meet the curriculum.
