ISLT 7361: Introduction to Digital Media
Course Description: Hands-on approach to multimedia production techniques. Develops understanding of technical and conceptual tools for the basics of digital media, video editing, still image and audio file manipulation. Students create a web portfolio to present their digital products.
Reflection: Similar to when I began the Introduction to Web Development course, I began this course super nervous! I grew up in a household with incredibly traditional parents and was rather used to just “basic” technology. We had Wi-Fi and a family laptop, pre-paid flip cell phones (my first smartphone happened when I moved out and even then, wasn’t used to it’s fullest potential). So, as I began this course/graduate program I was very nervous about my abilities and potential challenges that would arise. YouTube videos, “how-to” articles, and the help of others was invaluable during this course and I learned so much from everyone.
The most useful thing for me was probably learning how to make a video outside of just speaking into a camera and instantly uploading to YouTube. I can see so much potential using iMovie (or other platforms and tools) in my classroom to have students demonstrate what they have learned. I also really enjoyed being able to create the final portfolio website. Being able to practice and use coding is something that will allow me to maybe even be involved with different classes at the high school I teach at as well. I know it might be a stretch, but after taking this course along with Action Research (to which my research project was about flipping the classroom), I really would like to find a way to have the students somehow help me to create videos that I could use in the future when I am 100% ready to flip my classroom.
