ISLT 7310: Grant Writing 101
Course Description: This course is designed to help individuals become acquainted with the processes, strategies, and resources for writing winning grant proposals. Participants will be asked to create a short grant proposal as the culminating project of the course.
Reflection: This course was a little different than the other courses I had taken in the program. I originally had signed up for this course because I needed some more credits and I knew that having some knowledge about grants would benefit me in both my career as an educator and in my role as a Director for HOBY.
The first day of this course I had set my goals to be to learn how to properly write a grant, so I could potentially help provide the students in our district with more and different opportunities to learn math. As well as to learn where to look for grants and successfully write/apply for one. I believe I did achieve my goals and expectations! While I didn’t end up writing a proposal for math education, I did find a potential funder for the future and write a proposal that I am proud of to help the culture and learning environment for our students in the junior highs. Throughout the course, we learned all the little details, tips, and tricks to writing a successful grant. I also think I have a good idea of where to begin looking for examples and sources when I begin to write more proposals as well from the research I have had to do for this course. I will also admit, I began this course a little nervous too! I had some background in grant writing, but nothing major. I had no idea how much actually went into writing a successful proposal. I will certainly use the layout of this course in the future as a guideline for my future proposals—it was so helpful! I really appreciated taking the process step-by-step and having all the constructive feedback.
